Call it oxymoronic, but The Tunnel is a legal site for tagging—a graffiti street gallery—that finally gives the likes of Banksy and friends a home for their artful defacing.
Here’s how it happened. During the first May bank holiday of 2008, members of the Cans Festival took a desolate tunnel underneath Waterloo station and stenciled it mercilessly in the name of creating a de-criminalised spectacle of street art. In an organic kind of way, any aerosol artist could make their contribution purely by turning up and making their mark—as they did, in droves.
The results of this endeavour are on show in Leake Street, Waterloo for the next six months, and plays like a veritable who’s-who of graffiti superstars: Banksy, Faile and Mau Mau all grace these walls, making this a real heady opportunity for aspiring graffers to whip out their cans and join them.
